Dumpster Diving in the Anthropocene
Timo P. Vartiainen’s Trash Is Luxury is a series of archaeological expeditions into the world of trash found in residential dumpsters in and around Helsinki. The expeditions were conducted by the artist in 2017, the centenary year of Finland’s independence, and particularly on bank holidays. Using the items he retrieves from the dumpsters, Vartiainen creates compositions that investigate consumerist habits, values and the passage of time.
Anthropocene is a newly proposed geological epoch that is characterised by the extensive and lasting traces humanity leaves on the earth.
