Japanese Yayoi Kusama (born 1929) is one of the world’s foremost contemporary artists. HAM has brough two temporary installations by Kusama to Helsinki, one to the Esplanadi park and the other into the Winter Garden. Both were inaugurated Helsinki Day, 12 June 2016. You can find the installation from the park until 30 September. Narcissus Garden was on display in the Winter Garden until 4 September.
Kusama is especially well known for these endlessly replicated polka-dots. To her, all humans, stars, the Earth and the Sun are just polka dots. They cannot exist alone but together create a complete universe.
”These works have been inspired by beautiful nature and people, and they create communication between nature and living beings. The shining city of Helsinki, as well as the life we wish for becomes even more beautiful.”
Part of Esplanadi park is utterly transformed. Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees has established a wonderland in the park when 20 trees in Theatre Esplanadi are wrapped in Kusama’s dotted fabric. The work will be on show until 9 October. Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees has previously been on show in London, Singapore, Moscow and elsewhere.
Kusama’s work in the Winter Garden was installed in the Palm Room. Consisting of a thousand mirror-surfaced steel spheres, Narcissus Garden is named after the youth in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection in the water. Kusama presented the first version of the piece as far back as 1966 at the Venice Biennale. Since then, versions of the work have been on show around the world. Narcissus Garden was on display in the Winter Garden until 4 September.
