Jaakko Niemelä – Nostalgia (available 14 December 2019 to 15 March 2020)
This guided tour takes us to the exhibition Nostalgia by artist Jaakko Niemelä (b. 1959), which is the final part of a research project on the artist’s memories of his father. Niemelä has travelled in the footsteps of his father, sea captain Erkki Niemelä, on ocean-going ships and has shaped the material collected into an impressive collection of works. Consisting of scaffolding, video animation and a music soundscape, the installation deals with themes central to Niemelä’s art, such as disintegration and structural breakdown, but also, on a more personal note, longing and letting go.
During the guided tour, the guide will first introduce the participants to Niemelä’s art and the present works, after which the participants can explore the exhibition independently. After this, the participants will assemble to continue the discussion led by the guide. The duration of the guided tour is 45 minutes.
