Tiina Raitanen: Recall

Tiina Raitanen’s exhibition deals with materials and objects that have been close to us, some even part of our daily lives, but are now gradually becoming history. ‘Recall’ means remembering, recollecting, bringing back to mind and to call back for repairs.

Start date

21.11.2015

End date

10.01.2016

Tiina Raitanen’s exhibition consists of three works of art. The eponymous Recall consists of ceramic parts reminiscent of CD and DVD discs and broken up disc racks – the kind of junk that fills up flea markets and landfills. They are signs of a culture about to disappear.

Rims consists of twisted metal hoops Raitanen discovered in a wood when working at the Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf artist residence. The hoops are from wooden barrels that have been used as pots for exotic plants at the Wiepersdorf Castle. When the barrels have started to rot, they have been discarded in the woods. The artist polished the hoops and turned them into an art work that spreads into the gallery.

Stonerocks consists of collages of shapes made from trash thrown in the woods and along running paths and industrial materials found in nature, which she has converted into abstract ceramic sculptures.

Tiina Raitanen’s works examine different kinds of environments and materials. She forms random materials found in nature into things that are barely reminiscent of what used to be. By shaping these materials into works of art the artist wants to keep their connection with their industrial origin and create new, organic associations.

Raitanen earned a Master of Fine Art degree from the Academy Of Fine Arts in 2012. Her recent exhibitions include Louhikko – Heitto – Error tilassa at the Titanik Gallery in Turku in 2014 and group shows at Salon Wiepersdorf in Berlin in 2015 and Mondes Pararléls in Paris in 2013.

The exhibition is supported by Finnish Cultural Foundation and Oskar Öflunds Stiftelse.
