A bookplate often includes the book owner’s initials and an illustration reflecting things that are important to the owner. The bookplate is affixed to the top left corner of a book’s front endpaper. Jansson’s ex libris, illustrated in 1947, contains several motifs meaningful to her: the sea, a woman’s body, a Moomintroll, flowers, and a burning heart with the text “Labora et Amare” below it, a slightly misspelled version of the Latin slogan meaning “to work and love”. In the workshop, we will make bookplates using the drypoint technique, which is an intaglio printmaking method. We will start by sketching subjects from the Paradise exhibition. The actual image is incised into a plastic plate with a metal needle and printed onto paper using a press.
