Artist Eero Eerikäinen, Oskari Jauhiainen
Ursininkallio, Merisatamanranta, Eira, Helsinki
Sculptor Oskari Jauhiainen and Architecht Eero Eerikäinen designed this concrete memorial in 1968 to commemorate Finnish seafarers. Previously a flame burned at the top of this 12-meter-high monument, but the flame has been turned off for technical reasons. The memorial also includes a bronze compass with the inscription “Suomen merenkulkijoille Finlands sjöfarare MCMMLXVIII” – In Memory of Finnish Seafarers, 1968.
In 1984, the Finnish Seamen’s Mission revealed a copper plaque, designed by Oskari Jauhiainen, commemorating sailors who drowned when M/S Malmi sank on the Baltic Sea on 17 December 1979.
The work belongs to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed and curated by HAM.
