Elina Vainio: Spells
The two installations on show are both predicated on the concepts of heat and dryness. They point to climatic conditions wherein even the most advanced technologies are no longer able to guarantee the sensibility, let alone the continuity of life.

The title, Spells, refers both to the idea of a period of time and to magical incantation or enchantment, providing a layered framework for the works.
Vainio typically uses a combination of different media in her works to explore the stretching and representation of time on a conceptual plane. In her recent work, she has discovered resonances to her ideas in geological events such as erosion and the production chains of soils.
“Living things try to keep living. Life wants to live.”
