Reflections

Artist Risto Salonen

Merihaanpuisto, Sörnäinen, Helsinki

Risto Salonen’s Reflections is made of glass and steel. A column consisting of glass plates is set between polished steel ailerons. An essential effect is created by lighting which enhances the sculpture’s structure and, reflecting from the surfaces, their opacity. Reflections belongs to a trend originating in the sixties which utilized kinetic impressions and abstract natural phenomena related to vision. The piece is located on the east end of the Merihaka district’s south waterfront. Originally, it was a part of a larger plan including plants and a street cafe. The plan was not, however, realized.

In 2007-2008 the sculpture got a new pedestal, and the glass parts were renewed.
Due to building in the area, the artwork has been removed and will be replaced before 2030.

The work belongs to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed and curated by HAM.
