Encounter

Artist Ukri Merikanto

Johannesbergintie 8, Helsinki

Merikanto has received acclaim from his very first exhibition in 1972. From the beginning his works have been ascetic and simple, examples of the pure and clear expression typical of contemporary Finnish architecture and sculpture. The piece comprises three elements, all made of red granite. As many of Merikanto’s works the Encounter has strong emotional content. The strained balance of the form on top of the central element blocks vertical movement in the piece, creating tension which is amplified by the surface treatment and the sharpness of the forms.

The work doesn’t belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
