Artist Ville Vallgren

Kaivokatu 2, Helsinki

The Ateneum building was designed by the architect Theodor Höijer and completed in 1887. It was originally built for the art schools and collections of the Fine Arts Association of Finland and the Finnish Handicrafts and Applied Arts Organization. The facade was decorated by Carl Eneas Sjöstrand and Ville Vallgren who made the medals located between the windows on the facade. The medals depict famous artists. The remainder of the decoration was carried out by the decorative sculptor Magnus von Wright.

The medals don’t belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
