Kari Huhtamo: Steel Construction, 1990. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum Teräskonstruktio / Steel Construction Artist Kari Huhtamo Malminkaari 23 courtyard, Malmi, Helsinki Steel Construction at no. 23 backyard by artist Kari Huhtamo. The steel tubes are welded together in an idosyncratic way which can be interpreted as a spatial-geometrical form. As the work gleams in the light it has a lighter, more organic appearance suggesting a flower-like form, or even that of the wings of a butterfly. The work doesn’t belong to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed by HAM. The artist’s trademark is of simplified forms and glistening steel. He has other other public works to his name including Avarte in Pihlajamäki (a district of Helsinki), and a steel monument inaugurated in Rovaniemi (in the north of Finland) from the year 1977.
