Virpi Kanto

Herttoniemenrannan ala-asteen koulu, Petter Wetterin tie 5, 00810 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

A Child’s Nine Lives by Virpi Kanto (b. 1959, Oulu) is a concrete relief installed on the wall of a space that serves as the school’s assembly hall, dining room and library. It features nine human faces with clusters and circles made of stones. The faces are all cast from the same mould using different concrete mixes, which lends the relief a range of hues and luminances. The relief is three metres tall and five metres wide.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
