Kuvasto Cabinet of Things, School Library, Pencil Statistics and other works Anu Tuominen Oulunkylän ala-asteen koulu, Otto Brandtin tie 13, 00650 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Anu Tuominen (B. 1961, Lemi) created several artworks for the former Veräjälaakso Daycare Centre to lend new life to old objects. Nowadays the building works as Oulunkylä Elementary School. Cabinet of Things is an assemblage of curious and fascinating found objects in a glass display case. Installed on a wall in the dining room, Milky Way is made of cookie cutters. The wall hanging entitled Piece of Land and Sky in the entrance hall is composed of socks and mittens, while the two display cases in the same space, Line of Statistics and Curve of Statistics, are made of pencils. Library is constructed of old school books and small objects that explore the themes of zoology and botany. Painting in the dining room is not a painting but a relief made of crayons. The subject matter in all the works is associated with the world of schools and school subjects. Tuominen makes her works with found everyday objects she collects, typically ones that are worn-out or hand-crafted and often infused with a sense of nostalgia. By grouping and combining the objects and giving them inventive titles, she creates works of art that exploit memories associated with the objects’ origins while producing entirely new associations and meanings. The works were produced under the Percent for Art programme, and they belong to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
