Garden of the Mind, Discoveries

Petri Makkonen

Paloheinän ala-asteen koulu, Ylipalontie 1, 00670 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

Petri Makkonen (b. 1965) created three works for the Paloheinä Primary School. The first, Garden of the Mind, is installed above the doors leading to the school library. The collages are made of natural materials, dried plant parts and bird feathers, and cast in epoxy resin.

The second work, Discoveries, which is displayed in a glass case in the dining room, consists of seven pieces of sculpture that resemble mushrooms. The work includes a photograph of the same sculptures in a forest.

The third piece, Knowledge Can Sometimes Be Found in Unexpected Places, was a library corner with books and three owl chicks. The owl is a symbol of wisdom. Made of wood and foam plastic, the work is permanently removed.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
