Miika Nyyssönen Jeans Miika Nyyssönen Päiväkoti Merituuli, Suolakivenkuja 6, 00180 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Miika Nyyssönen’s (b. 1965, Mikkeli) work Jeans consists of four parts all made of denim. Mounted in the dining room of the Merituuli Daycare Centre, the piece entitled Jeans Formulation is a relief that is seven metres long. Made from strips of denim of different hues, the work leaves room for imagination. Its abstract motifs and geometric forms can be variously interpreted as alluding to urban settings, tree branches, some mechanical production process or children’s toy structures. The work entitled Face Series consists of faces created with denim. Their proportions vary: one face has a large nose, another is endowed with huge eyes. The piece titled For Falling Asleep is made up of sixteen small faces, each about six centimetres across. It is mounted in the children’s resting space, and its simple forms are intended to help children fall asleep. The fourth part features egg-shaped sculptural objects covered in denim that children can touch and move about. Nyyssönen sourced the denim from flea markets. The signs of wear in the cloth underline the mundane nature of the medium. The works are sewn together using traditional denim seams. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
