Kaleidoscope

Gun Holmström

Laajasalon terveysasema, Koulutanhua 2, 00840 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

Gun Holmström’s (b. 1964, Porvoo) Kaleidoscope is displayed in the entrance hall of the Laajasalo Health Centre. The work is a round steel disk, two metres in diameter with 961 LED lights embedded in a kind of light mosaic. The lights are programmed to change in a certain order, resulting in a constantly shifting pattern, like that of a kaleidoscope.

The work joins modern technology with a symmetrically changing mandala-like pattern used across many cultures and seen throughout the ages. The artist wanted to create a calming and meditative work for the customers of the health centre.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
