Mo(nu)ments by Pasi Rauhala (b. 1978, Lahti) is a large installation in former Kulosaari Community Centre. Drawing its inspiration from cities and cultures around the world, the work consists of nine small stages or dioramas embedded in the curving brick-clad wall of the daycare centre.

The miniature worlds are like display windows that showcase objects associated with different countries and cities. The featured cities and countries are Los Angeles and New York in the United States; London in Great Britain; Rio de Janeiro in Brazil; Berlin in Germany; Amsterdam in the Netherlands; Helsinki in Finland; Beijing in China; Giza and Kairo in Egypt; Paris in France. The title Mo(nu)ments refers to the scenes of ordinary life and principal city sights seen in the dioramas.

Just as in his earlier works, here too Rauhala has underlined the importance of multiple perspectives. There are all sorts of things both big and small going on simultaneously in the tiny worlds. The views can be seen as playful or political; both interpretations are equally possible. The wealth of detail in the dioramas invites close observation: there is always something new to discover. The positioning of the scenes at different heights also invites viewers to change their perspective.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
