Kuvasto Path / Beautiful Earth, Path / If You Had No Shadow Reija Palo-oja Haartmanin sairaala, Haartmaninkatu 4, 00290 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Twenty oil paintings by Reija Palo-oja (b. 1970, Sipoo) are installed in the staff premises and meeting rooms of Haartman Hospital. All works belong to the two series Path / Beautiful Earth and Path / If You Had No Shadow. Their themes are landscapes and their spatiality and painterly gestures. According to Palo-oja, the works belong to the tradition of painting in which a landscape is seen as a reflection of the inner world. The motif in them is often notional, almost abstract. The paintings are composed of several layers that are so thin as to be translucent. “The metaphorical nature of the paintings, the translucent layers and airiness, all invite the viewer to stop. The purpose of these elements is to infuse the painting with a sense of experience and presence that is powerful yet very fragile.” The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
