Repeatance

Markus Rissanen

Pohjois-Haagan ala-asteen koulu, Tolarintie 6, 00400 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

Markus Rissanen (b. 1973, Kuopio) has created a series of paintings entitled Repeatance on the stairwell walls of the primary school in Pohjois-Haaga. The works on the eastern wall feature natural and environmental motifs, and those on the western wall depict the built cultural environment. The motifs include a thermometer, a waterfall and the sun, as well as water in its three states: gas (clouds), liquid (droplets) and solid (snowflakes). The largest dynamic element of the work is the waterfall that starts high up on the wall next to the uppermost landing, giving someone on the stairs a sense of moving up or down a stream. The focal endpoint of the work is the bright orange sun at the top of the stairs.

The motifs on the western wall are houses, a map and an underground train network. The map is a schematic rendering of the surrounding urban area, with elements from the school student’s experience, including the school building. The underground train network is a picture of the system envisaged for Helsinki. The artist wanted to create a document of the time when this work was created and what, in 2006, Helsinki was expected to become by the time the students had grown up. Also embedded in the work is a number and letter puzzle, but it does not offer ready answers, inviting viewers instead to use their imagination and experience the joy of learning and discovery.

The installation was commissioned by HAM and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
