Kuvasto Safari Antti Arkoma Päiväkoti Mestari, Kornetintie 5, 00380 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Antti Arkoma’s (b. 1961) Safari is a metallic sculptural installation that greets people at the front door of the daycare centre. All who enter must walk through the five-metre-tall work. Made from bent and welded aluminium, the work creates a light and airy impression, despite its huge size. The organic shapes of the piece remind the viewer of insects, whereas the structural parts link the work with the world of machines and technology. The weld marks visible on the surface are an important part of the artwork. The sculpture also includes an electric motor with a timer that turns the wheels for one minute twice a day. As the wheels turn, lights embedded in the structure light up, and the work comes alive. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
