Saara Ekström’s (b. 1965, Turku) Space Soup on a wall in the Strömberg Primary School consists of six boards shaped to resemble planets and two lenses hanging in front of them. The planet-like pieces are finished with pearlescent paint whose colour changes with the direction of the light. The colour changes are particularly noticeable in winter, when there is little natural light.

The basic idea in the work is that children are adventurers and explorers in the universe: the lenses are magnifying glasses through which they observe their environment. Ekström says that planets symbolise knowledge that moves around us, mysterious and sometimes seemingly inaccessible. However, the shapes can also be seen as referring to tiny early forms of microscopic life or to the microcosm found in a drop of water.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
