Kuvasto Starry Sky Johanna Ilvessalo Laajasalon peruskoulun pääkoulu (ent. Laajasalon yläaste ja lukio), Koulutanhua 1, 00840 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Starry Sky by Johanna Ilvessalo (b. 1964, Helsinki) is installed in the stairwell at Laajasalo Secondary School. Silhouettes of school students are etched onto a lacquered steel sheet. Variations in the size and tone of the silhouettes produce an impression of space and of human figures that approach or recede. A light behind the sheet shines through tiny holes, creating a starry sky that twinkles in pale blue. The etched silhouettes are like shadows that seem to follow students as they pass the work while making their way up and down the stairs. The artist wanted to create a space where viewers could be led to consider their own existence by observing the shadows. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
