Timo Wright The Embrace of Wind Timo Wright Aurinkolahden peruskoulun sivukoulu Kanava (Korttelitalo Kanava), Aurinkotuulenkatu 11, 00990 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture Timo Wright’s (b. 1977, Helsinki) interactive sound art work The Embrace of Wind is installed on the second floor of Aurinkolahti Primary School’s sideschool Kanava, between student services and the music room. “Walking in the Aurinkolahti area, I’ve often noticed a continuous wind, sometimes sharp, sometimes gentle, blowing there. The sea and the wind in particular bind the area and residents together. The Embrace of Wind brings the wind and the outdoor space into the interior of the building.” The sound work consists of two different soundscapes, one passive, the other active. The passive one is made up of several soundtracks of different length that circulate at random in the space, providing a constant, almost inaudible sound of wind. The active soundscape is louder and interactive. You might suddenly hear the sound of a bird next to you, the squeak of a tree or the crack of a branch, rain, distant wind or leaves sighing. When you leave the space, nature calms down and the sounds become passive once more. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
