We All Have a Moment of Choice

Markku Rantala

Jousipolku 1, 00370 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

The work by Markku Rantala (1950–2007, Helsinki) in Pitäjänmäki library consists of two oil paintings: one a vertical piece reaching a height of about five metres, and a smaller, circular painting. Both are mounted on the back wall of the library, where it strikes the eye the moment you enter the room.

The abstract works employ simple shapes and colours, with just a few geometric items depicted on surfaces dominated by red. The elements in the two paintings are in dialogue with each other, with the ones in the larger piece repeated in the smaller one but with a slight variation. The artist says he wanted to avoid all spatial illusion and all representational and narrative elements. Due to its large size and red colour, the work dominates the space. It serves as an eye catcher and counterpoint to the diversity of the book covers on the shelves.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
