Kansojen ystävyyden monumentti (Ystävät ja kylänmiehet) / Monument to the Friendship of the Peoples
Artist Antti Neuvonen
Ystävyyden puisto, Itäkeskus, Marjaniemi, Helsinki
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the treaty of friendship, cooperation and mutual assistance with the Soviet Union, the City of Helsinki municipal board organized an open sculpture competition. The competition ended in 1978 in the victory of Antti Neuvonen’s (1938-2011) entry. The sculpture comprises several over life-sized stylized human figures representing the different peoples of the world. They are connected by children touching each other. The piece is cast in bronze and it was erected in 1983. It contains the text “Monumentum amicitiae populorum” (“Monument to the Peoples Friendship”).
The work belongs to the City of Helsinki’s art collection, which is managed and curated by HAM.
