Kauppiaita / Tradesmen

Artist Michael Schilkin

Runeberginkatu 14-16, Helsingin kauppakorkeakoulu, Etu-Töölö, Helsinki

‘Tradesmen’ is the ceramic relief on the facade of the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration. It depicts tradesmen from different parts of the world dancing together amid symbolical figures related to trade, including Hermes, the tutelary god of tradesmen, with his scales. On the one hand, the relief refers to the education the School provides and to its role as a centre of economic research, and on the other, to the history and international traditions of trade. The chatty narrative of the relief’s imagery is typical of many of Schilkin’s works.

The work doesn’t belong to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.
