Retkipäivä vuorella / Outing on a Mountain

Artist Olli Salo

Pohjois-Haaga, Hopeatie 14, Helsinki

Made of red granite from Mäntsälä, Olli Salo’s (b. 1967) Outing on a Mountain stands in the courtyard of a nursing home in the Pohjois-Haaga district. Standing more than 2 metres tall, the granite block has clouds and mountain tops sculpted on it. On a ledge is a bronze cast depicting a group of people on an outing.

Salo plays with scales in the work: the group of people, the mountain and the clouds sculpted on the stone are all on widely different scales. The artist’s intention is to create different viewing experiences. The work was commissioned by the Helsinki Housing Production Department at the behest of the Helsinki Art Museum in 2007. The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum.

Other public artworks by Olli Salo in Helsinki include Three Moments in the Life of Chewing Gum in the yard of Pukinmäki comprehensive school (2001), Pipe and Propeller in Ilveskorpi park (1998), and Exhaust erected in 2007 in the parking lot outside Stoa, the Cultural Centre of Eastern Helsinki.
