Toivo Kuula

Artist Anu Matilainen

Toivo Kuulan puisto, Taka-Töölö, Helsinki

Toivo Kuula’s (1883-1918) tragic death was a tremendous loss to Finnish music. During his short career he wrote especially songs and chamber music. His “Stabat Mater” is considered his main work. Because of his death he never finished the ballet and symphony he was in the process of preparing.

The memorial to Toivo Kuula is an expressionist figurative portrait. It’s sense of movement and vigour is further enhanced by the form of the pedestal.

The Toivo Kuula society commissioned the memorial from Anu Matilainen (b. 1946) and donated it to the City. The work belongs to the collections of the Helsinki Art Museum. The work is cast in bronze and was unveiled in 1988.
