Crossroads

Kimmo Schroderus

Finlandia-talo, Mannerheimintie 13, 00100 Helsinki

Indoor Sculpture

This work by Kimmo Schroderus (b. 1970, Jyväskylä) is located in the elevator lobby in the new annex of the Finlandia Hall. The relief-like work is made of bent and welded stainless steel plates. The crisscrossing and curving lanes inside the square shape are reminiscent of a highway intersection.

According to Schroderus, ” –The content of the work lies somewhere between objective and non-objective art. The basic idea is a busy intersection or an amalgamation of crossroads, but I have not followed the idea slavishly, nor is the result a realistic depiction of the real world. Crossroads is a starting point that lends logic and structure to the form language of the piece. On a mental level, the work echoes the principal reason for the elevators on the opposite wall: the underground parking facility and the customers traveling up from there.”

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
