Indoor Sculpture

The large wall of illuminated glass receptacles in the school foyer is a work of art by Petri Kaverma (b. 1963, Helsinki). Entitled Encyclopedia, it is made of untreated steel and tempered glass. There are 528 slots in the work, which measures 2.6 metres in height and 11 metres in length.

The appearance of the work is in constant flux because of its interactive nature. Pupils can place artworks they created in class into the slots for display. Empty slots contain photographs of clouds in the sky; each photograph is different. The title of the work is a reference to knowledge: an encyclopedia is an alphabetically ordered compendium of knowledge on general subjects or a specific discipline.

The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
