Kuvasto JOY Catarina Ryöppy Päiväkoti Santahamina, Kadettikouluntie 5, 00860 Helsinki Indoor Sculpture JOY by Catarina Ryöppy (b. 1939, Helsinki) is composed of a framed photograph and neon lights. The photo of children bouncing on a trampoline was taken in Sitka, Alaska. Above the photo is an arc of colourful neon lights that spell out the word ‘joy’ in eight languages – Finnish, Swedish, Sami, Romanian, English, French, Russian and Arabic. The artist wanted to bring an element into the daycare centre that speaks to the world of children. The work is joyful as well as dreamlike and even magical. The range of languages points to contacts that transcend cultural boundaries. The work is located in the downstairs lobby of the daycare centre. The work was produced under the Percent for Art programme, and it belongs to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum. At map
