Indoor Sculpture

Marjatta Kekki (b. 1966, Vihti) has created two works installed in the former Mustakivi Primary School (now Puistopolku Primary School). The photographs that make up the piece entitled Molecule at Sea present a serial view of a various stages of a wave.

Sea in a Drop in a sculptural installation that consists of enlarged droplets. By magnifying water drops, the artist plays with scale. Taking as her subject the individual drops that make up a body of water, Kekki draws attention to the fact that the sea is ultimately a mass of tiny components. According to the artist, the work is a tribute to constituents and the collective strength they represent.

The limpid, lens-like drops are made of cast resin and installed on a concrete block wall in the school corridor, opposite which are windows with a view of the school yard. Kekki’s choice of materials is intended to complement the architecture of the building.

The works were produced under the Percent for Art programme, and they belong to the collection of the City of Helsinki, managed by HAM Helsinki Art Museum.
