Eila Hiltunen: The Bank of Finland fountain, 1961. © Photo: HAM Helsinki Art Museum The Bank of Finland fountain Artist Eila Hiltunen , Helsinki Eila Hiltunen’s fountain at the Bank of Finland is an abstract piece welded from copper plates. It is one of Hiltunen’s first welding works. The fountain is a layered structure of copper plates and plate-like surfaces consisting of interlaced ribbon-like metal wire. These form tapering and prolonged rectangular sections which spread out from a narrow, circular formation, and fold back towards the centre, ending in a web of metal-wire planes. The shape resembles that of cupped hands facing each other with their finger entwined. The sculpture poses questions concerning transparency and non-transparency and defies the laws of solidity and structure; despite its very solid and heavy material, it barely seems to hold together.
